For most students, the first appointment at University Counseling Services (UCS) will be an assessment appointment. During this appointment, the student is asked to complete some forms online via a laptop computer provided upon arrival, which is then reviewed with the counselor. The counselor will provide an overview of counseling as well as discuss how UCS may be able to help with the student’s specific concerns. Options for moving forward will be explored and may include self-help strategies, individual counseling, group counseling, relationship counseling, participation in skills workshops, or referral to a specialist or other type of treatment modality.
At the end of this first appointment, the student and the assessment counselor will jointly determine an appropriate service modality to meet the student’s need in the most effective and efficient manner.
