Mission Statement
University Counseling Services (UCS), an office of Student Affairs at Truman State University, is part of a comprehensive program of student services. UCS has as its primary purpose the prevention of psychological difficulties and treatment of the mental health concerns of its students. UCS also supports the University's mission in promoting the liberal arts values of self-awareness, life-long habits of social and emotional wellness, and the achievement of human potential. UCS works to achieve our mission by providing individual, group, couples, and crisis counseling, outreach, and consultation to the Truman State University community.
Specificially, UCS does the following to support its mission and the students of Truman State University by:
- functioning as the primary mental health center for students
- promoting adjustment to college, thereby increasing academic success
- being available to students and the campus community in times of crisis
- facilitating the personal and psychological growth of students in becoming high functioning and socially responsible adults
- supporting the developmental growth of traditional and non-traditional students throughout the college experience
- enhancing students' appreciation of diversity and individual differences as they enter a rapidly changing social and work environment
- actively promoting an environment of personal safety and respect
- collaborating with academic departments and campus agencies to promote student welfare
- being sufficiently flexible in our provision of services to accommodate the individual needs of students
- staying abreast of current student issues and concerns
- maintaining a staff of highly trained psychologists and counselors to ensure excellence of service
- maintaining a diverse staff with varying theoretical orientations
